Republican Turkish Party (CTP) leader Sıla Usar İncirli has announced an initiative to establish a “parliamentary” investigation committee into the Filo Jet sinking off Kyrenia.
She said the tragedy had resulted in a complete loss of credibility for the Turkish Cypriot “government”, arguing that political responsibility extended beyond any single “minister”.
Call for all evidence to be preserved
İncirli said the CTP was preparing to request the establishment of a committee to investigate every aspect of the disaster.
“No document must disappear and no evidence must be obscured,” she said, expressing confidence in the police investigation and warning that justice would otherwise not be served.
She argued that the tragedy had exposed the continuing weakening of institutions, stressing that the protection of citizens must be the authorities’ primary responsibility.
According to İncirli, political responsibility rests with the entire “government”, which cannot absolve itself by removing a single “minister”.
“It must now admit that it cannot do this job and clear the way for the country,” she said.
The CTP leader recalled that her party had recently requested an emergency session of the “parliament” to discuss safety concerns, but the governing parties had denied that any problem existed.
She also called for an end to efforts to push “legislation” through “parliamentary committees” amid the current political uncertainty.
Turkish vice president visits the north
Meanwhile, Turkish Cypriot “prime minister” Ünal Üstel received Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz at the “airport” on Thursday. Yılmaz travelled to the north for a brief condolence visit.
Relatives of people killed or still missing following the Filo Jet sinking were transported by bus to occupied Nicosia to meet Yılmaz at the Turkish “embassy”.
His visit was expected to last only a few hours. Following the meeting with the families, Yılmaz was due to meet Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman behind closed doors.
Later in the afternoon, Yılmaz and Üstel were expected to make statements at the illegal Tymbou airport before the Turkish vice president returned to Turkey.
Maritime restrictions imposed
The Turkish Cypriot “ports authority” has announced restrictions across the maritime area extending from Davlos to Cape Kormakitis because of the continuing investigation into the 30 August 2026 disaster.
All water sports operated by hotels and beaches in the area have been suspended. Navigation and fishing activities are also prohibited within the search-and-rescue zone, with criminal penalties предусмотрено for anyone violating the restrictions.
