Repeated flooding along 28 October Avenue and the wider Engomi area has prompted an examination of infrastructure that may have contributed to the problem.
Following the latest floods on Saturday, 29 August, the Nicosia District Local Government Organisation said it would identify the causes before determining what corrective work is required.
What the investigation will examine
The organisation will review the dimensions of the stormwater drainage pipes and assess any effects caused by the culverting of the Klimos River.
It will also record potential gaps in the stormwater drainage network across the area and surrounding roads, while examining the impact of the absence of retention ponds at the International Fair grounds and the old Nicosia airport.
“This is a complex matter requiring a thorough investigation and, above all, time,” the organisation said.
“We must first identify the causes of the problem and then address the accumulated problems and failures of previous decades.”
Retention ponds await government decisions
The organisation has already requested a Council of Ministers decision allowing it to assume responsibility for designing and constructing the retention ponds.
Before work can proceed, however, the responsible ministry must make final decisions and formally designate the ponds’ locations.
