Police are increasing patrols and traffic management measures across Cyprus as motorists head to coastal areas and mountain resorts for the Assumption Day holiday.
The busiest outbound period is expected between 16:00 and 20:00 on Friday, while return traffic is forecast from 15:00 until around 21:00 on Sunday.
Increased policing across the road network
Speaking at the Latsia weighing station on Friday, Police Traffic Department Road Safety Officer Giorgos Milis said increased traffic is traditionally recorded over the August 15 holiday on motorways, interurban roads and main routes leading to coastal areas and mountain resorts.
Police will introduce additional measures to regulate traffic and assist motorists travelling in all directions.
The measures will include increased policing, patrol coverage across the road network and traffic controls wherever required.
When and where traffic will peak
Milis said a large-scale departure from Nicosia towards coastal areas and mountain resorts is expected between 16:00 and 20:00 on Friday.
Similar traffic volumes are also expected from Limassol towards coastal and mountain destinations.
Return traffic is expected to increase on Sunday from 15:00 until around 21:00. Traffic officers will regulate vehicle flows where necessary to help motorists travel more smoothly and reduce the risk of collisions.
Checks for serious traffic offences
Police will also focus on serious traffic offences, including driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, speeding, failure to wear seat belts, riding motorcycles without a protective helmet, dangerous overtaking and using a mobile phone while driving.
Milis said these offences have been shown in recent years to contribute to serious and fatal road collisions.
