Justice minister cites cross-border crime and tech threats as Nicosia hosts board talks

Cyprus called for deeper European security cooperation as it hosted Europol’s Management Board in Nicosia, with officials warning of increasingly complex cross-border threats.

Justice Minister Costas Fytiris said cooperation within the EU was “a practical tool that delivers tangible results”, pointing to organised crime, terrorism, cyberattacks and online child protection as key areas.

Speaking at the 148th board meeting on Monday, Fytiris said rapid technological change and shifting geopolitics require closer coordination and sustained investment. He highlighted the growing role of artificial intelligence and data tools in policing, with Europol supporting member states.

Police chief Themistos Arnaoutis said threats are becoming faster and more transnational, adding that no country can tackle them alone. He described Europol as a key partner in intelligence-sharing and operational support.

The meeting coincides with Cyprus concluding its term as vice-chair of Europol’s board and its EU Council presidency.

Europol officials thanked Cyprus for hosting and for its role in advancing cooperation, including efforts against migrant smuggling and shaping the agency’s future direction.
