As thousands of people head for Cyprus's forests and countryside over the August 15 (Dekapentavgoustos) long weekend, the Forestry Department has issued an appeal for heightened vigilance, warning that the great majority of forest fires on the island are caused not by nature but by human activity.
Department says it is ready for the influx
The Department says it is in full readiness to receive the public expected to visit Cyprus's forests over the holiday period, and wants people to be able to enjoy the countryside safely. At the same time, it is appealing for respect for the natural environment, stressing that fires caused by human actions remain a persistent and serious threat, year after year.
Barbecue rules: charcoal yes, wood no
Particular emphasis is placed on barbecuing. The public is asked to:
- Light charcoal only in specially designated, safe areas
- Avoid burning wood altogether
- Make sure every fire is fully extinguished once cooking is finished
Owners of holiday homes who hire third parties to clear their gardens are also reminded to stop them burning cut grass or branches as part of the job.
What the law bans between June and September
The Department is reminding the public of the rules that apply every year from 1 June to 30 September:
- No tools or machinery that generate heat, flame or sparks may be used inside a state forest, or within two kilometres of one, without the written permission of the Director
- Discarding lit cigarette ends in forest or agricultural areas is strictly forbidden
- Lighting a fire is permitted only in designated picnic and excursion areas
- Dumping rubbish in forests is banned
Report smoke or fire immediately
Anyone who spots smoke or fire is urged to contact the Forestry Department on 1407, or the emergency services on 112, without delay.
