Despite rising global conflict, a small group of countries continues to rank among the safest, driven by stability, social trust and quality of life.

Global peace has declined again, with more active conflicts than at any time since the Second World War. Yet a handful of countries continue to stand out for stability and safety, according to the Global Peace Index.

The index ranks 163 countries using 23 indicators, including violence, conflict and militarisation, to measure overall peacefulness.

The safest countries

1. Iceland

Iceland remains the world’s safest country, maintaining its top spot for years, with stability linked to strong public services, social cohesion and geographic isolation.

2. New Zealand

New Zealand ranks second, combining low militarisation with strong community ties and relative isolation from global conflict.

3. Switzerland

Switzerland’s low crime and long-standing neutrality help sustain high levels of trust and stability.

4. Slovenia

Slovenia enters the top five, with low defence spending and a lifestyle centred on community and nature.

5. Ireland

Ireland ranks fifth, combining low violence with a tradition of neutrality and social openness.

What drives safety

Across these countries, common factors include:

  • Strong and stable institutions
  • High levels of social trust
  • Limited involvement in conflict
  • Emphasis on quality of life and community

Despite a worsening global backdrop, these examples highlight how long-term investment in stability and social cohesion can sustain peaceful societies.
