Israeli strikes on the Gaza Strip killed nine people, including five children, on Thursday, according to the civil defence authorities in the Palestinian enclave. The incidents occurred during one of the deadliest days since the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas came into effect in October.
Mahmoud Bassal, a spokesperson for Gaza’s emergency services operating under the control of Hamas, told Agence France-Presse that the fatalities were recorded in separate incidents across the territory.
In southern Gaza, a drone strike hit a tent inside a camp housing displaced people, killing four individuals, among them three children. In a separate strike in the same area, one person was killed near Khan Younis, Bassal said.
In northern Gaza, an 11-year-old girl was killed near the Jabalia camp. Bassal also reported the death of an adult following an air strike on a school in the area.
Two additional people, including one child, were killed in other strikes, one of which occurred in central Gaza.
Asked by Agence France-Presse to comment, the Israeli military said it was “looking into” the reported incidents. Earlier, it said in a statement that it had carried out a “precision strike” on a location in Gaza City in response to the launch of a “projectile”.
Hamas spokesperson Hazem Qassem told Agence France-Presse that the strikes “confirm the Israeli occupation’s backtracking from its commitment to the ceasefire”.
