Cyprus was among the member states that succeeded in adding to the European Council conclusions a call to review certain EU climate and energy policies, as governments voice concern that some upcoming measures could significantly increase electricity costs.
The Council text notes the European Commission’s intention to propose steps for a smoother introduction of the ETS2 emissions trading system, and invites the Commission to review its implementation framework “including all related aspects.”
The ETS2, set to take effect in 2027, will extend carbon pricing to fuels used in buildings and transport, a move expected to raise energy prices for consumers across the bloc.
Speaking after the summit, President Nikos Christodoulides said Cyprus and other member states stressed the need to make the EU’s environmental goals “more realistic.” He added that references to reassessing measures linked to green targets were included in the final conclusions following joint pressure from several governments concerned about affordability and competitiveness.
