More than seven kilograms of suspected drugs, including a large quantity of powdered synthetic cannabis known as kief, have been seized during a police operation in the Famagusta district, leading to the arrest of two men.
According to Cyprus Police, officers from the Famagusta Drug Law Enforcement Unit (YKAN), working in cooperation with the Rapid Response Unit (MMAD), carried out a search of agricultural land in the free Famagusta district following the evaluation of intelligence information.
The operation was conducted in the presence of the landowner, a 49-year-old man.
Arrests
During the search, officers located a 28-year-old man on the property. Police said he was residing illegally in the Republic and was arrested for immigration-related offences.
A subsequent search uncovered a plastic toolbox-style suitcase containing 6.373 kilograms of cannabis resin and one kilogram of powdered cannabis substance known as kief.
Police described the seizure as particularly significant, noting that it is the first time such a large quantity of kief has been detected in Cyprus.
In a statement, police explained that kief, often referred to as cannabis powder, consists of fine crystalline particles separated from cannabis flowers and is known for its high concentration of active compounds.
Both the 28-year-old and the 49-year-old were arrested on suspicion of drug-related offences and are expected to appear before Famagusta District Court on Sunday for the issuance of remand orders.
The Famagusta Drug Law Enforcement Unit is continuing its investigation.
Police also noted that an increasing variety of narcotic substances has been identified in Cyprus in recent months, adding that recent large-scale seizures demonstrate the authorities’ determination to combat the illegal use and trafficking of controlled drugs.
