The reported attacks came just hours after a US-brokered truce entered into force.

At least five people were killed in Israeli airstrikes and drone attacks in southern Lebanon on Saturday, according to Lebanese state media, only hours after a ceasefire between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah movement came into effect.

Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency (NNA) reported that Israeli warplanes and drones carried out a series of strikes across the Nabatieh region overnight and during the early hours of Saturday.

Residential buildings destroyed

The attacks reportedly destroyed residential buildings and homes, while Israeli artillery shelled Nabatieh and surrounding areas before dawn.

The reported violence comes despite a ceasefire agreement reached on Friday following a sharp escalation in hostilities in Lebanon.

A US official said the truce between Israel and Hezbollah came into force at 4pm Cyprus time on Friday. The agreement was also confirmed to Reuters by a senior Israeli official and two Hezbollah sources.

The latest incidents raise fresh questions about the durability of the ceasefire, which was intended to halt fighting after days of deadly clashes that threatened wider regional stability.

There was no immediate comment from the Israeli military regarding the reported strikes.
