Two men aged 23 and 21 have been arrested after police seized more than two kilograms of suspected opiate substances during an operation in Limassol.
According to Police, officers from the Drug Law Enforcement Unit (YKAN) carried out the operation on Friday as part of an ongoing intelligence-led investigation.
Police said officers identified a 23-year-old man walking along a road in Limassol on Friday afternoon. A search of a bag in his possession allegedly uncovered two plastic packages containing dried poppy pods from the opium poppy plant (Papaver somniferum), with a total gross weight of 418 grammes.
Evidence seized
The 23-year-old was arrested on suspicion of committing offences under the drugs legislation.
A subsequent search of his residence led officers to a second man, aged 21, who was present at the property at the time.
During the search, police discovered a cardboard box containing eight plastic packages filled with dried opium poppy pods, with a combined gross weight of 1.682 kilogrammes. The 21-year-old was also arrested for offences allegedly committed in the officers’ presence.
Police said a number of additional items were recovered from the property and retained as evidence.
Both suspects were later re-arrested under court warrants and remain in custody while investigations continue.
The Drug Law Enforcement Unit is continuing enquiries into the case.
