Four Cypriot films will feature at the 49th Drama International Short Film Festival (DISFF49), which will take place in Greece from 6 to 12 September 2026.
According to an announcement by the Deputy Ministry of Culture, this year’s festival programme will feature 157 short films. Of these, 30 will compete in the official Greek competition and 19 in the Greek student competition, while 45 films will be presented as world premieres. A total of 3,420 films from around the world were submitted for consideration.
Two Cypriot films have been selected for the official Greek competition, with one also competing in the festival’s international programme.
Cypriot filmmakers
The first is “Free Eliza (Notes on an Anatomical Imperfection)” by Alexandra Matthaiou, which premiered at the Directors’ Fortnight section of the Cannes Film Festival in May.
The second Cypriot entry in the official Greek competition is “Γιασεμί και Ρόδο” (Jasmine and Rose), directed by Spyros Charalambous from a screenplay by Christina Georgiou.
Cypriot representation will also extend to the national student programme. The selected films are “Bloom” by Christoforos Herodotou and “Cinema Rialto” by Antony Petrou, which has been selected for the KIDDO category.
Petrou will return to the Drama festival for a second consecutive year, following last year’s participation with his film “The Fight”.
Cypriot filmmakers will also take part in the festival’s development activities. Two directors have been selected for the Pitching Lab, which will run from 6 to 10 September as part of the festival.
They are Nikolas Kassinos, with his project “Blind Spot”, and Angelos Charalambous, with “Khaki Babes”. Both projects are currently at the development stage.
