Measures previously considered in response to the shortage of nursing staff have been suspended following a meeting between the Cyprus Employers and Industrialists Federation (OEB) and private healthcare sector stakeholders.

According to an announcement issued after Tuesday’s meeting, participants unanimously agreed to reconsider any dynamic measures in order to allow additional time for the Neophytos Charalambides, Minister of Health, to present solutions.

Meeting focuses on nurse shortages

The meeting, attended by representatives of private healthcare providers, focused exclusively on the situation created by the acute shortage of nursing staff and the possible adoption of response measures.

OEB said the Health Minister attended the meeting at its request and briefed participants on actions being taken and solutions promoted by the government for a long-term resolution of the issue.

During his remarks, the minister stated that both he and the government recognise the scale of the problem, estimating the shortage at around 600 nurses.

He added that the ministry will examine specific measures aimed at providing short-term relief while also pursuing a medium-term and permanent solution.

Decision to reconsider response measures

Following the minister’s departure from the meeting, participants unanimously decided to suspend consideration of reaction measures to give him additional time to advance proposed solutions.

OEB stated that it and healthcare service providers have submitted several proposals that, according to the organisation, do not negatively affect nurses.

The organisation expressed hope that the state will assume responsibility toward patients and the broader healthcare system.
