The Municipality of Nicosia presented a new initiative aimed at improving the welfare of stray animals in the city, announcing the installation of organised feeding points for stray cats and the launch of a dedicated “Nicosia Pet Friendly” information platform. The project was introduced during a public event highlighting the role of cooperation between local authorities, volunteers and the private sector.
The initiative is implemented in partnership with KOSMOS Insurance, which supports the programme as the main sponsor, contributing to efforts to enhance animal welfare and improve quality of life in the city.
Mayor of Nicosia Charalambos Prountzos, addressing the event, said the initiative reflects the culture, sensitivity and responsibility of society towards all forms of life.

He noted that cats form an integral part of Nicosia’s identity and urban environment, adding that their proper care contributes both to public health protection and to maintaining the balance of the urban ecosystem.
Feeding infrastructure across the municipality
As part of the programme, 21 feeding stations have already been installed across all municipal districts. In addition, two organised feeding areas have been established along the Pedieos river and at Olympiados Park.
The system operates through controlled and clean feeding procedures, supported by volunteers who help ensure the proper functioning of the feeding points and monitor the welfare of the animals.
Role of volunteers and corporate support
CEO and Executive Board Member of KOSMOS Insurance, Kyriakos Tyllis, said the way a society treats animals is a measure of its civilisation. He added that the company supports initiatives that promote respect and harmonious coexistence between people and animals.
Volunteers play a central role in the programme, maintaining feeding areas and ensuring the initiative operates effectively.
Demonstration of feeding stations
A practical demonstration of the feeding stations was presented during the event by the initiator of the concept, Maria Arkoudi, who travelled to Cyprus for the occasion. Children from Faneromeni Kindergarten also participated in the presentation, highlighting the importance of cultivating animal welfare awareness from an early age.
The Mayor also emphasised the importance of sterilisation as a key tool for responsible management of stray animal populations and called on citizens to actively support related efforts.
Launch of the “Nicosia Pet Friendly” platform
During the event, the municipality also presented the new “Nicosia Pet Friendly” page, a digital platform designed to provide information and raise awareness on animal welfare issues.
The platform will offer information on responsible pet ownership, adoption opportunities, lost and found animals, as well as activities and pet-friendly spaces across the city.
According to the Municipality of Nicosia, the initiative aims to strengthen cooperation between local authorities, citizens and the private sector in order to promote a more humane and sustainable urban environment that respects and protects animals.
