Shipping through the Strait of Hormuz faces additional uncertainty after Iran outlined penalties for vessels that fail to comply with its transit arrangements. Fines, detention or seizure are among the measures listed in a notice posted on X by the Persian Gulf Strait Authority (PGSA).

The warning increases the risks facing charterers and shipowners whose vessels pass through the Strait of Hormuz, a key maritime route for global energy supplies.
Updated compliance list
The PGSA, a new body established by Iran to manage the strait, said cargo ship owners should consult an updated list of vessels considered non-compliant when planning Gulf-related voyages.
Vessels involved in operations such as ship-to-ship transfers or transhipment with non-compliant ships will also be added to the list, the authority said.
Those seeking to have their vessels removed from the non-compliance list must submit a request, accompanied by relevant explanations, to Iran’s maritime authorities, according to the post.
