Cyprus has completed the technical requirements for entry into the US Visa Waiver Program, but the process will not move forward while Washington reassesses the scheme, competent sources told CNA.
US authorities have confirmed the progress made by Cyprus, although no new countries are currently being admitted to the programme.
US confirms technical progress
Sources said the United States had verified Cyprus’s progress in meeting its technical obligations for joining the Visa Waiver Program.
However, the US administration is conducting a broader review of the programme and has not added any new participating countries.
Further review under US procedures
During a visit to Cyprus in July, US Department of Homeland Security Under Secretary for Strategy, Policy and Plans Rob Law reaffirmed that Cyprus had completed all the required technical criteria.
A statement issued following his meeting with Deputy Minister to the President Irene Pikis said any further consideration of the issue would take place in accordance with US internal procedures.
