Dust From Libya Blankets Cyprus, Further Waves Expected Over the Next 48 Hours

Dust transported from Libya on Thursday is affecting much of Cyprus, with moderate to high concentrations recorded across the western half of the island and very high levels in mountainous areas, particularly around Agia Marina Xyliatou. In the eastern part of the island, dust levels remain lower for now but are expected to increase in the coming hours.

Severe Episode Recorded

The dust episode recorded on Thursday is described as particularly severe, with concentrations reaching up to 750 μg per cubic metre, far exceeding the permissible limit of 50 μg/m³. The readings have raised concerns about potential public health impacts, especially for sensitive population groups.

Mud Rain and Reduced Visibility

At the same time, light rainfall has been observed in mountainous areas in the form of mud rain, while dense fog combined with dust has significantly reduced visibility. Conditions are especially challenging on the mountain road network, prompting calls for motorists to exercise increased caution.

More Dust on the Way

According to Kitasweather, dust levels are expected to gradually ease during the second half of the day, particularly in western regions. However, a new dust transfer is forecast from Saturday, with another—potentially more intense—wave expected from Sunday night into Monday.

Health Advisory

Vulnerable groups, and especially people with respiratory conditions, are advised to limit unnecessary travel and avoid outdoor physical activity until conditions improve.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation as dust transport episodes remain a recurring feature during this period.
