Country surpasses 98% of HIV targets, records fewer new cases and expands nationwide access to PrEP. Under the theme “Overcoming Challenges – Redefining Our Response to HIV and AIDS,” Cyprus marked this year’s awareness day with the presentation of new epidemiological data and an overview of the country’s progress in recent years.
According to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), Cyprus has surpassed 98% of the established HIV targets—performance levels well above the European average. The country currently ranks:
- 2nd in Europe for HIV diagnosis
- 3rd for treatment coverage
- 3rd for achieving viral suppression
A Consistent Climb Since 2018
From 2024 onwards, Cyprus has been counted among the first European countries to meet over 98% of all HIV indicators.
It also holds the top position in Europe for viral suppression among all people living with HIV, meaning almost every individual in treatment has successfully reduced the virus to undetectable levels.
Data from the past six years provide a clearer picture of the epidemic’s evolution. Between 2018 and 2023:
- 76% of new diagnoses concerned men
- 24% concerned women
Last year alone, 125 new diagnoses were recorded — a 23% decrease compared with 2023.
PrEP to Be Offered Nationwide
Health authorities also announced that from next year, PrEP testing — a key tool for preventing HIV transmission — will be available in every district of Cyprus, expanding access to one of the most effective prevention methods.
Cyprus’ progress places it firmly among the European leaders in HIV control, with sustained improvements across testing, treatment and prevention, and a downward trend in new cases.
