The first dog park in the Latsia district of the Municipality of Latsia–Geri will open on 11 May, offering residents a dedicated public space for pets and their owners.

The park is located at the junction of Thessalonikis and Kritonos Tornariti streets. It was fully funded by the municipality’s own resources, at a total cost of €80,000.

A new space for residents and pets

Images obtained by P show a modern and functional site, designed around the needs of both dogs and their owners. The park has been built using inert materials and galvanised metal elements, while its equipment meets the required safety standards.

The area is divided into two separate zones, one for small dogs and one for larger dogs, to ensure safer use of the space. It also includes play equipment, benches for visitors and drinking fountains with a continuous water supply. Tree planting has also been included to improve the natural setting and provide shade.

Opening hours and supervision

Municipal staff will monitor the park’s operation, with a focus on cleanliness and safety.

In the first phase, opening hours are expected to begin one hour after sunrise and end one hour before sunset, until the municipality fully assesses users’ needs.

‘The beginning of something bigger’

Speaking to P, Mayor Christos Pittaras described the project as an investment in residents’ daily lives.

“On 11 May, we are delivering to our residents a space that was missing from the area and which had been requested by citizens for years. It is not simply a dog park. It is a place for meeting, socialising and daily use, which meaningfully upgrades the neighbourhood,” he said.

Pittaras said the municipality had taken residents’ needs into account, creating a safe, modern and functional space with separate areas for small and large dogs, certified equipment and facilities for both owners and pets.

He added that the project forms part of a wider municipal strategy to create better public spaces across the area. Plans are already under way for a similar facility in the Geri district.

“This is an investment of small cost but great value. We want residents to feel that their town offers spaces where they can live better, meet each other and build communities,” he said.

A small project with visible impact

The creation of the first dog park in Latsia addresses a long-standing gap at a time when pet ownership in urban areas continues to grow.

Although relatively low in cost, the project is expected to have a direct impact on residents’ quality of life, creating a new daily meeting point for people and a safe space for dogs to exercise and socialise.
