Senior AfD parliamentarians have called for an end to military aid for Ukraine, closer ties with Moscow and the restoration of the Nord Stream pipelines, while backing key elements of Donald Trump's foreign policy.

Senior members of Germany's Alternative for Germany (AfD) have proposed ending military assistance to Ukraine, restoring relations with Russia and reopening the Nord Stream gas pipelines, while expressing support for aspects of US President Donald Trump's foreign policy.

The proposals were presented in Berlin on Monday by AfD parliamentary group members Markus Frohnmaier, Stefan Keuter and Gerold Otten through two policy papers focusing on Germany's relations with the United States and Russia.

The documents advocate closer cooperation with Washington and a renewed partnership with Moscow, diverging from the German government's current approach to the war in Ukraine. The papers, however, represent proposals by individual parliamentary figures rather than an officially adopted party platform.

Proposal for US-Russia summit on energy

A central element of the proposals is the restoration of energy cooperation with Russia.

The AfD figures suggest holding a summit in Abu Dhabi in spring 2027 involving representatives of the United States and Russia.

The proposed meeting would focus on restarting the Nord Stream gas pipelines and exploring new economic and energy agreements.

The authors also call for the lifting of economic sanctions imposed on Moscow, arguing that renewed trade relations could strengthen the German economy.

Opposition to Ukraine joining EU and NATO

The documents take a clear position against Ukraine's integration into Western institutions.

The AfD politicians call for Germany to end military support for Kyiv and reject Ukraine's future membership of both NATO and the European Union.

Under their proposal, Ukraine would adopt a neutral status, with Russia recognising its statehood.

They also describe the goal of recovering all Ukrainian territories currently under Russian control, including Crimea, as unrealistic.

Instead, they advocate a peace agreement designed to guarantee the survival of the Ukrainian state and the security of territories remaining under Kyiv's control, backed by guarantees from third countries.

Notably, the new documents do not repeat earlier condemnations of Russia's 2022 invasion, instead describing the war as a tragedy that should be ended through negotiations.

Support for Trump-era policies

In the paper addressing transatlantic relations, the AfD figures endorse several aspects of Trump's foreign policy.

They welcome US policies towards Venezuela, Cuba and the Panama Canal, and express support for elements of Washington's approach towards Greenland.

However, they stress that any annexation of Greenland without the consent of Denmark and Greenland itself would be unacceptable.

The group also views a reduction in the US military presence in Germany positively and opposes the deployment of additional American missiles on German territory.

The proposals underline the effort by these AfD representatives to promote a foreign policy combining closer cooperation with the Trump administration and improved relations with Russia, even if that entails a significant shift in Germany's position on Ukraine.
