The United States has reaffirmed its support for a settlement of the Cyprus problem based on a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality, following a meeting between US Ambassador John Breslow and UN envoy María Ángela Holguín.
Breslow met Holguín, the personal envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General on Cyprus, as diplomatic efforts continue ahead of upcoming contacts on the Cyprus issue.
US support for UN framework
In a social media post, the US ambassador said he welcomed the opportunity to exchange views with Holguín and hear her assessment of current efforts.
"I was pleased to meet with the Personal Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General on Cyprus Maria Holguin. Always valuable to hear her perspective on the way forward."
Breslow reiterated that the United States remains committed to peace and to a settlement based on a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality for all Cypriots, in line with relevant UN Security Council resolutions.
Ahead of next diplomatic contacts
The meeting comes as Holguín continues consultations with key stakeholders ahead of the next phase of Cyprus-related diplomacy, including the planned trilateral meeting on 9 November.
The UN envoy has recently held meetings with President Nicos Christodoulides, Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman, and other officials involved in efforts to generate momentum in the Cyprus process.
