New details have emerged in the investigation into the death of Greek singer Giorgos Mazonakis, with the two doctors accused in the case now being held under protective conditions at Korydallos Prison.
The 58-year-old doctor has been placed in the prison's sixth wing, where he shares a cell with other pre-trial detainees who are also being held under protective arrangements.
Following his arrival, he underwent the standard induction process regarding prison rules and procedures.
Husband distances himself from treatment
According to a report by Star, the 58-year-old reportedly denied having treated Mazonakis and sought to distance himself from the medical care provided by his wife.
"I never had Giorgos Mazonakis as a patient. I don't know why I'm here," he was reported as saying, maintaining that his practice simply shared premises with his wife's.
He was also quoted as saying that "it was only a matter of time" before Mazonakis died and that the question was "who the bomb would explode on".
Doctor held under protection
His 56-year-old wife is being held in the women's wing of Korydallos Prison and has reportedly been placed in a cell previously used by Eirini Mourtzoukou.
Upon entering the prison, she was briefed by management about detention conditions, visiting arrangements and procedures for depositing money.
According to the report, she is in a particularly difficult psychological condition.
She is also being held under protective arrangements and is allowed into the exercise yard with only a limited number of other detainees. The report said the atmosphere towards her in the women's prison is particularly tense.
Defence prepares legal challenge
Meanwhile, the couple's defence is preparing a new legal move.
Their lawyer, Nikos Agapinos, is expected to challenge the 58-year-old doctor's pre-trial detention order.
According to information cited in the report, the defence intends to call a 67-year-old man as a witness.
The man is reportedly expected to testify that he was being examined by the 58-year-old doctor during the critical hours on the day Mazonakis died, as the defence seeks to support the doctor's claim that he was not involved in the singer's treatment.
