Extensive search-and-rescue operations are under way in the Sea of Marmara following a collision between two Turkish-flagged commercial vessels off the coast of Constantinople, with authorities reporting that contact has been lost with the ten crew members aboard one of the ships.
According to the Constantinople Governor's Office, the collision occurred at around 3am approximately 18 nautical miles south of Silivri, west of Istanbul.
Turkish authorities said they have lost contact with the cargo vessel Tugberk Imamoglu and its ten-member crew, while coast guard vessels, rescue boats and a helicopter continue search operations in the area.
Rescue efforts continue
Search-and-rescue teams have been deployed to the scene as authorities attempt to locate the missing vessel and establish the fate of those on board.
The loss of communication with both the ship and its crew has prompted a major emergency response.
Second vessel reported undamaged
The second vessel involved in the accident was identified as the chemical/oil tanker Alsu.
According to initial reports, no visible damage has been detected on the tanker.
Cargo and cause of collision unclear
Authorities have not yet disclosed the nature of the cargo being carried by the Tugberk Imamoglu, which was travelling towards the Black Sea via the Sea of Marmara.
The cause of the collision remains unknown and investigations by the Turkish authorities are continuing.
