Fawzi al-Mansouri, the Libyan National Army’s military intelligence chief, was killed in a bomb attack in the eastern city of Benghazi on Monday night.
The LNA described the killing as a terrorist act and said an investigation had been launched.
Explosives planted in his vehicle
Al-Mansouri was killed when explosives planted in his vehicle detonated as he was leaving a local mosque, according to a military statement issued on Tuesday.
The LNA controls eastern Libya and parts of the country’s south under the command of Khalifa Haftar.
Investigation launched
Khaled Haftar, the son of the LNA commander, told Agence France-Presse that an investigation into the attack was under way.
“The evidence points to a heinous terrorist tactic,” he said.
“Terrorism is a scheme targeting the entire region, not only Libya.”
Libya remains divided
Libya has remained divided since the conflict that followed the overthrow of former leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.
Two rival administrations are competing for power. The UN-recognised government in Tripoli is led by Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibah, while the rival administration in Benghazi is backed by Khalifa Haftar.
The bombing deals a blow to the Haftar family’s efforts to project an image of stability across the areas under its control.
