President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides described his discussion with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman as very good and constructive, following his return from their meeting.

Christodoulides said the discussion would continue while the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy, Maria Angela Holguín, is in Cyprus. He said the two leaders had agreed, ahead of the continuation of their discussions in her presence, not to make further statements on specific issues and not to issue a joint communiqué.

The President also said that constructive joint meetings had been held with the Technical Committees on Youth and Cultural Heritage, as well as with the Civil Society Advisory Body. Views and suggestions were heard during the meetings and will be discussed as part of the meetings with the Turkish Cypriot leader.

Asked to confirm that the decision not to issue a joint communiqué was not the result of a deadlock, Christodoulides reiterated that it was a mutual agreement.

“I repeat, it was a good and constructive discussion, which will continue during Holguín’s presence in Cyprus, and I ask you, fully understanding your profession as well, not to ask me about any issue,” he concluded.
