New EDEK president Sofia Christodoulou Makri has convened a meeting of the party’s five-member Congress and Membership Register Review Committee, signalling that the decisions of the party’s Extraordinary Pancyprian Congress will be respected.
The committee meeting began at 5.30pm at the party’s offices, with the agenda including the contentious issue of the membership register and the setting of dates forthe Constitutional and Electoral Congresses.
Committee tasked with reviewing membership register
The Extraordinary Pancyprian Congress, held on 5 July, decided that a five-membercommittee should be established to examine the membership register and decide on thelifting of expulsions.
The Congress also authorised the committee to set the dates for the party’s forthcoming congresses.
The dates were announced on committee subsequently met and decided that the Constitutional Congress would take place on 11 October, followed by the Electoral Congress on 13 December.
The dates were announced on Facebook by committee member Nikos Nicolaides.
Dispute emerges over authority to set dates
The announcement was followed by a strong reaction from some members of the partyleadership who controlled the party machinery.
Statements were also issued by the party’s Press Office arguing that EDEK’s collective bodies were the only competent bodies authorised to decide the dates of the congresses.
The latest meeting comes against the backdrop of the dispute over the authority of thefive-member committee and its role in implementing the decisions of the Extraordinary Pancyprian Congress.
The five-member committee comprises the sitting president of EDEK, Nikos Nicolaides, Diomides Diomidous, Michalis Koutalianos and Pavlos Michael.
