Health authorities are on heightened alert following a sharp increase in West Nile virus infections across Cyprus. Epidemiological surveillance remains under way, with additional suspected cases being investigated.
The first confirmed fatality linked to the virus was recorded on 24 August and involved an elderly man.
Most cases detected in Nicosia district
Five of the seven confirmed cases involve people from different areas of Nicosia district, while one case was detected in Larnaca district.
The patients required treatment at Nicosia General Hospital.
Confirmed infections rise within days
The situation has changed considerably over a short period. On 1 September, four infections had been officially confirmed, while another two suspected cases were under investigation.
The following day, the number of confirmed infections rose to six, with two additional suspected cases awaiting laboratory results.
The latest figures bring the number of confirmed cases to seven, indicating increased circulation of the virus within the community.
