POED will wait for an updated proposal from the Education Ministry before adopting an overall position on proposed changes to the Teacher Appointment System.
The primary teachers’ organisation said Monday’s nearly two-hour meeting answered some of its questions, while further information remains outstanding.
Ministry promises updated proposal
POED President Myria Vassiliou told CNA after the meeting with Education, Sport and Youth Minister Athena Michaelidou that the union had submitted a series of questions aimed at clarifying key aspects of the ministry’s proposal.
“During the discussion, clarifications were provided on some of the questions we raised, while for others the minister committed to providing further information and clarification in the coming period,” Vassiliou said.
She added that these would be accompanied by an updated ministry proposal setting out the individual provisions and possible scenarios more clearly.
Union maintains position on appointment lists
Vassiliou said POED had reiterated its main position on retaining the Appointment List and correcting distortions in the Appointment Eligibility List, without teachers being treated unfairly or victimised.
POED will wait to receive the updated proposal and the ministry’s additional clarifications before adopting a comprehensive position.
Transitional period remains preferred option
“Following today’s meeting, we continue to believe that POED’s proposal to extend the transitional period is a tested and effective solution,” Vassiliou said.
She added that the proposal could support the smooth staffing of schools without creating unfairness or problems for teachers.
The issue will be discussed by POED’s Administrative Council in the coming period and as part of its coordination with the other two teaching organisations, OELMEK and OLTEK.
