Former Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar criticised current leader Tufan Erhürman for his support for a federal solution. He said Erhürman’s remarks on a rotating presidency raise questions in the negotiating process, arguing that the parameters of a federal solution cannot provide sufficient guarantees for the future of the Turkish Cypriot people”.

Tatar was speaking yesterday on a programme of the Kibris media group, which is featured on the front page of the Kibris newspaper today. “Our national policy is the policy of two states,” he said, adding that the sovereignty and equal international status of the Turkish Cypriots should be taken as the basis.

The former Turkish Cypriot leader also said political stability is necessary for sustainable economic growth and investment. He added that this is particularly important for the future of the breakaway state, in order for long-term projects to continue.

Today, the UBP congress is being held to select its 50 “MP” candidates ahead of 6 December. Mr Tatar previously served as the party’s president. The “election” campaign is under way in the occupied areas.

Tatar added that economic programmes under the protocols signed with Turkey must be implemented, and that the resources of the breakaway state must be used effectively to maintain investment.
