With so many construction sites operating simultaneously across Nicosia and Strovolos, drivers increasingly need a survival guide to navigate the traffic chaos.
Road closures, one-way systems, shifted lanes, diversions and constant changes to traffic flow have created a situation that is testing the patience of people travelling through the capital every day.
Tseri Avenue and old Strovolos
Perhaps the most characteristic example is Tseriou Avenue, where roadworks are affecting more than one section.
On the stretch between the junction with Konstantinoupoleos Street and Charalambou Pettemeridi Street, a temporary one-way system is in operation.
Traffic is permitted towards the centre of Strovolos, while drivers travelling in the opposite direction are required to use alternative routes.
The arrangement is expected to remain in place until 10 January 2027.
For residents and people who use Tseri Avenue daily, this means the disruption will not last just a few days but will continue for several months.
Works are also continuing on the section of Tseri Avenue between Myrtiotissas and Parnassou streets, where traffic lanes have been temporarily shifted.
The road remains open in both directions, but restrictions are in place and delays during peak hours are almost inevitable.
These works are scheduled to be completed by 21 December.
At the same time, works are continuing within the historic centre of Strovolos, particularly around Archiepiskopou Kyprianou Street and the surrounding road network.
Road closures and access restrictions are in place at various locations, with no clear date yet given for the full restoration of normal traffic.
Nicosia: Works from Agios Antonios to Pallouriotissa
In Nicosia, particular attention is required on Digeni Akrita Avenue in the Agios Antonios area.
Works to repair and reinforce the stormwater culvert are affecting the road near the Zorpas and Pandora bakeries, in one of the busiest parts of the area.
The project is expected to last approximately 28 weeks, meaning works will continue until spring 2027.
The project is being carried out in phases, with lane closures and other traffic restrictions imposed as work progresses.
Conditions on the road may therefore change depending on the particular stage of construction, meaning drivers should allow additional travelling time.
Further disruption is affecting Pallouriotissa, where resurfacing works are being carried out on several roads within the Agios Georgios Government Housing Estate until 14 October.
The affected streets are:
- Trikomou
- Ypomonis
- Foivis
- Alkminis
- Elpidos
- Pellis
- Nausikas
- Armonias
- Akadimias
- Dikaiosynis
- Aisopou
- Dafnis
- Aiglis
The roads are affected daily between 6am and 6pm.
Meanwhile, works are continuing in central Nicosia, affecting Kritis Street, Filippiados Street, the southern section of Naxou Street and the northern section of Orfeos Street.
Construction is also under way on Konstantinou Palaiologou Street, meaning motorists may encounter different traffic arrangements even across relatively short distances.
For drivers: Check your route and be patient
For people travelling through the city every day, the rule has become simple: check your route before leaving, avoid construction areas during peak hours wherever possible and allow extra time for your journey.
Because in Nicosia and Strovolos right now, the difficult part is not knowing where you want to go.
It is knowing which road will actually get you there.
