A powerful improvised explosive device was found outside a shop in Mesa Geitonia, Limassol, early on Wednesday after police received information about suspicious activity involving a motorcyclist.
The device did not explode and was safely defused by a police bomb disposal expert. Investigations are continuing to identify the motorcyclist and establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Motorcyclist flees police
According to police, information was received at around 2.30am about a suspicious person riding a motorcycle near the shop.
Officers who arrived at the scene located a high-powered motorcycle without registration plates, carrying one person.
When police arrived, the rider accelerated and fled.
A pursuit followed, but officers were unable to locate or stop the suspect.
Explosive device defused
During subsequent examinations outside the entrance to the shop, officers discovered a powerful improvised explosive device that had not detonated.
A police bomb disposal expert was called to the scene and safely neutralised the device.
The Limassol Criminal Investigation Department is continuing investigations to identify the motorcyclist and determine the circumstances under which the explosive device was placed.
