Cyprus' Ecologists Party has called for an immediate investigation into reports that dogs have been kept on the rooftop of a residence in Limassol district for several years, despite complaints allegedly dating back to 2022.
The party's Animal Action Group said complaints had been submitted to the Animal Police, Veterinary Services and other authorities and that, according to information available to it, the dogs remain on the rooftop.
The Ecologists said photographs and videos linked to the case raised concerns about the animals' welfare, alleging poor hygiene conditions and recording repeated barking and howling.
The party cited provisions of Cyprus' Animal Protection and Welfare Law prohibiting "the keeping, isolation or confinement of a dog or cat on a rooftop, balcony or veranda".
It called on authorities to investigate the case and enforce the legislation if the alleged violations are confirmed.
"The issue, therefore, is not whether legislation exists. The legislation exists and is clear. The issue is whether it is being applied in a timely and effective manner."
The party also requested information on what actions authorities have taken in response to previous complaints and urged the adoption of all legal measures necessary to protect the animals.
