Police have urged motorists to exercise extreme caution after severe weather, including hail, heavy rain and strong winds, affected the Polis Chrysochous area on Saturday.
Authorities warned that rapidly changing weather conditions could create hazardous road conditions and affect the safe movement of traffic.
Reduced visibility, wet roads, standing water and strong winds have increased risks for drivers, police said, calling on the public to avoid unnecessary travel where possible when weather and road conditions become dangerous.
Safety advice for drivers
Police urged motorists to:
• Reduce speed and adapt their driving to prevailing weather conditions.
• Maintain a greater safety distance from vehicles ahead, as stopping distances increase on wet roads.
• Avoid sudden manoeuvres such as harsh braking, rapid acceleration and abrupt steering movements.
• Refrain from attempting to cross flooded roads or areas with accumulated water when conditions are unsafe, as the depth and flow of water may be difficult to assess.
• Exercise particular caution during strong winds, which can affect a vehicle's course and stability.
• Watch for branches, debris and other obstacles that may have fallen or been carried onto the roadway.
• Ensure their vehicles are in good condition, particularly tyres, brakes, lights and windscreen wipers.
• Avoid non-essential journeys during periods of severe weather whenever possible.
Police stressed that adapting driving behaviour to weather and road conditions is essential for preventing collisions and protecting all road users.
Particular caution is required in the Polis Chrysochous area, where hail, rainfall and strong winds were already being recorded at the time of the warning.
