Police in Kofinou are investigating a case of alleged negligent and reckless acts following a fire at a petrol station in a community in the Larnaca district shortly after midnight on Friday.
According to police, two men, aged 32 and 38, visited the petrol station at around midnight.
While the 32-year-old was refuelling his vehicle, the 38-year-old approached him with an unlit cigarette in his mouth and attempted to light it using a cigarette lighter. The action allegedly caused a flare-up and ignition.
The fire was extinguished by other people who were present at the scene.
Both men were taken to the Accident and Emergency Department of Larnaca General Hospital. The 32-year-old was treated for minor burns and later discharged.
The 38-year-old sustained second and third-degree burns, particularly to his lower limbs, and was admitted for further treatment.
The Kofinou police station is continuing its investigation into the incident.
