Ahmad Badreddin Hassoun, Syria’s grand mufti under Bashar al-Assad, has been convicted over crimes committed during the country’s 14-year civil war.
The ruling makes him the tenth member of the Assad regime to be convicted by the Syrian justice system.
Damascus court ruling
The Fourth Criminal Court of Damascus found Hassoun guilty of several offences, including incitement to violence, legitimising crimes and abuse of power.
Hassoun served as Syria’s grand mufti from 2005 to 2021 and was closely associated with Bashar al-Assad.
