A 44-year-old man has been remanded in custody for two days after DNA evidence allegedly linked him to the theft of generators and other property worth €225,000 from premises in the Paphos district.
The Romanian national is being investigated in connection with alleged thefts, malicious damage and possession of burglary tools in Androlikou and Argaka during 2025.
Court orders two-day remand
Paphos District Court ruled that the evidence presented at this stage disclosed the alleged commission of the offences under investigation and established reasonable suspicion connecting the suspect to them.
The court was also told that the investigation had not been completed, with police expected to take 10 further statements from people in the suspect’s social and professional circles.
The man appeared without a lawyer and did not object to the remand request.
Suspect complains about detention conditions
During the hearing, the suspect complained that he had been forced to sleep on the floor the previous night because two detainees were sharing a cell containing only one bed.
Citing health problems, he asked to be held under appropriate conditions. The court subsequently ordered that all necessary arrangements be made during his detention to accommodate his health needs.
DNA evidence under examination
Case investigator Giorgos Koulountis told the court that the suspect was allegedly connected to burglaries, thefts and malicious damage committed in Androlikou and Argaka in 2025.
According to the complainant, premises used to store generators in Androlikou were broken into on 2 March 2025. Generators and other items with a combined value of €225,000 were reported stolen.
Police investigators from the Paphos Criminal Investigation Department subsequently conducted DNA examinations which, the court heard, allegedly linked the 44-year-old to the case.
Separate theft reported in Argaka
A separate complaint was filed in Argaka after generators and other property worth approximately €2,000 were stolen. The suspect is also believed to be connected to that incident.
Koulountis said that various items of evidence had been collected from both scenes and sent for scientific examination.
