The Fire Service responded to 54 incidents over the past 24 hours, including 27 fires, with a man hospitalised in Liopetri, a wildfire burning through 2.5 hectares in Paphos and a fire outside a school restaurant in Strovolos.
According to the Fire Service, crews attended 27 fire incidents, 19 assistance calls and eight false alarms between 6am on 29 July and 6am on 30 July.
Property owner hospitalised in Liopetri
At 6.35pm on Wednesday, firefighters were called to a blaze at a property in the livestock-farming area of Liopetri in Famagusta district.
Four fire engines from the Famagusta and Xylofagou stations responded.
The fire had been extinguished by the owner before firefighters arrived, after which crews carried out final extinguishing operations and ventilated the premises.
The blaze caused extensive damage to the building's contents.
The owner was taken by ambulance to the Accident and Emergency Department at Famagusta General Hospital after suffering smoke inhalation.
Investigators said the fire was caused by a leaking liquefied petroleum gas heater.
Paphos wildfire burns 2.5 hectares
Earlier in the day, at 1.06pm, crews responded to a wildfire in dry grass and wild vegetation near the village of Choletria in Paphos district.
The fire burned through 2.5 hectares of dry grass, crops and stubble, as well as a number of hay bales, before being brought under control at 2.15pm.
Seven fire engines were deployed, supported by:
- Five Forestry Department vehicles;
- The Game and Fauna Service;
- Choletria Community Council fire units;
- A private agricultural tractor; and
- Four aerial firefighting assets.
Fire near school restaurant in Strovolos
At 12.14pm, firefighters were called to a fire involving three large refuse bins positioned against the exterior wall of a school restaurant and club facility in Strovolos.
Three fire engines from the Akropolis Fire Station attended the scene and brought the blaze under control within half an hour.
Smoke entered the restaurant building, prompting firefighters to ventilate the premises.
Minor damage was caused to the paintwork on the kitchen wall and to extraction flues. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
