The Cabinet has approved an additional €6.25 million in financial assistance for livestock farmers, including compensation for those affected by foot-and-mouth disease and a separate support package for sheep and goat farmers.
The latest measures bring the total assistance approved for the livestock sector to €39 million, according to the Agriculture Minister.
Compensation for livestock and production losses
Of the newly approved funding, €4.75 million will be used to compensate farmers for losses linked to foot-and-mouth disease.
The payments will cover, among other costs, the loss of livestock and reduced milk production.
Several cases remain under review after discrepancies were identified between the number of animals declared by farmers and the number recorded at their holdings. These cases will be examined further based on an opinion issued by the Legal Service.
Targeted aid for sheep and goat farmers
The Cabinet also approved an additional €1.5 million for sheep and goat farmers, implementing an agreement reached during their recent meeting with the President of the Republic.
The Agriculture Minister said the sheep and goat farming sector remains both economically important and particularly vulnerable, requiring targeted measures to support its sustainability.
