Civil Defence, volunteer teams and a British Bases fire engine have joined Limassol firefighting units at the scene. Early indications suggest the fire was sparked when a lorry made contact with electricity cables.

A fire that broke out on Saturday afternoon in the Trachoni area towards Asomatos in Limassol has mobilised significant firefighting resources across the district.

According to a statement issued at 3:50pm by Fire Service spokesperson Andreas Kettis, the fire is burning dry grass and wild vegetation in the Trachoni area. Firefighting units from Limassol district are leading the response, supported by Civil Defence, organised volunteer groups, a fire engine from the British Bases, two excavators and a portable firefighting unit from Kourion Municipality.

Volunteer group Atlas Fireteam, whose members are at the scene assisting with firefighting efforts, published video showing thick smoke rising from the area.

Based on initial assessments by the Fire Service, the fire appears to have been caused by a lorry making contact with electricity cables belonging to the Electricity Authority of Cyprus.
