Police say four kilos of cocaine hidden inside cosmetic containers were found in the luggage of a 65-year-old passenger.

A 65-year-old man has been arrested after authorities found four kilos of liquid cocaine hidden in cosmetic containers at Larnaca Airport, in what police described as the first seizure of its kind in Cyprus involving such a quantity.

The drugs were discovered at around 2.15pm on Tuesday during a joint operation by the Drug Law Enforcement Unit and customs authorities aimed at identifying people attempting to import narcotics into the country.

According to police, officers instructed a customs official to stop the 65-year-old passenger for inspection after he arrived at Larnaca Airport from abroad. During a search of his luggage, authorities found 10 nylon packages containing a suspicious liquid substance concealed inside plastic cosmetic containers.

Further examinations confirmed that the substance was cocaine in liquid form, with a total gross weight of four kilos.

The suspect was arrested for a flagrante delicto offence and taken into custody to assist police investigations.

Police said this was the first time liquid cocaine had been detected in Cyprus in such a quantity.

The Larnaca district branch of the Drug Law Enforcement Unit is continuing investigations.
