Open-access “boat” libraries installed on Protaras beaches offer visitors the chance to borrow and exchange books, building on a similar initiative launched in Oroklini five years ago.

As part of efforts to upgrade the experience of beachgoers in Protaras, the Paralimni–Deryneia Municipality has installed open-access lending libraries shaped like boats on popular beaches.

The initiative aims to strengthen the distinct character the municipality seeks to give Protaras as a destination of hospitality, culture and quality experience for every visitor. The initiative began at Vrisi and Fig Tree Bay beaches, while in recent days similar libraries have been placed at Agia Triada and Kapparis beaches.

These libraries offer residents and visitors the opportunity to borrow or exchange books during their time at the beach, making the most of their leisure time. As the municipality announced, the libraries operate in a simple way, allowing users to choose a book to read and, if they wish, return it or replace it with another, thus contributing to maintaining and enriching the collection.

The Paralimni–Deryneia Municipality is calling on the public to embrace the initiative and actively contribute to its success, strengthening a culture of reading and knowledge sharing.

“The open lending libraries have already been warmly received by the public and constitute another initiative combining culture with the unique coastal environment of our area. Foreign visitors photograph and share these distinctive libraries on social media, highlighting in an authentic and lively way the philosophy of the Protaras Riviera,” the municipality said in a statement.

It is noted that the boat-shaped libraries carry the logo of the new tourism identity “Protaras Riviera”, linking the experience of reading a book, enjoying the sea and experiencing Protaras with the broader promotional strategy of the Paralimni–Deryneia Municipality.

Oroklini initiative came first

It is noted that the first open-access lending libraries shaped like boats were installed around five years ago on Oroklini beach, on the initiative of the then community council, in cooperation with the Larnaca Tourism Development and Promotion Company.

The libraries were placed along the Giannades coastline and continue to serve beachgoers to this day.

According to information, in the coming months themed benches shaped like boats are expected to be installed along the Oroklini coastal promenade, with the aim of further enhancing the area’s island character.
