Employees at the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (RIK) are set to stage strike action on Friday, 19 June, stepping up pressure on management over what unions describe as long‑standing unresolved labour issues.
The three unions have announced a one-hour stoppage, from 20:00 to 21:00, warning that accumulated workplace problems have been left unaddressed for too long. They argue that repeated calls for dialogue have gone unanswered and that critical issues remain effectively “stuck in a drawer.”
In a strongly worded statement, union representatives criticised both management and the board of directors, accusing them of failing to meet the organisation’s needs. They described the administration as ineffective, lacking responsiveness, organisation and clear direction, while also pointing to what they called a fragmented board unable to deliver meaningful reform.
According to the unions, even matters that have reached mediation at the Ministry of Labour remain unresolved, despite requiring urgent handling. They say this reflects a broader pattern of delay and inaction.
Particular concern was raised over pension issues, noting that nearly a year and a half after an agreement reached on 7 March 2025, some retirees have still not received their full entitlements. The unions argue that similar delays affect a range of other labour matters, both collective and individual.
“This situation shows a lack of respect towards staff,” the unions said, adding that the organisation requires a functioning administrative framework capable of making it productive and beneficial as a public broadcaster.
They stressed that the decision to strike was not taken lightly, describing it as a last resort aimed at protecting both employees and the organisation itself.
At the same time, the unions called on the state to intervene, urging authorities to examine the structural problems facing RIK and take corrective measures.
“RIK, as a public broadcasting institution, deserves a better present and a stronger future,” the statement said, adding that employees are seeking leadership with both the knowledge and the capacity to provide direction and vision for the organisation.
