Authorities say voluntary mechanism eased migration pressure, with Cyprus recording highest relocations among five Mediterranean frontline states

Cyprus has completed the relocation of 3,039 applicants for international protection to other European Union member states under the bloc’s Voluntary Solidarity Mechanism, authorities said on Thursday.

The Deputy Ministry of Migration and International Protection and the Asylum Service said the scheme aims to support frontline EU countries facing disproportionate migration pressures, with all actions funded through the EU Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund.

Cyprus recorded the highest number of relocations among the five Mediterranean countries participating in the mechanism – Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Malta and Spain.

Authorities said the programme’s completion reflects effective coordination between Cyprus, the European Commission, the European Union Agency for Asylum and the International Organization for Migration, as well as participating member states.

They added the initiative underscores the importance of practical European solidarity in addressing migration challenges.

Cyprus is expected to deepen cooperation with EU partners under the new Pact on Migration and Asylum, which comes into effect on June 12, 2026, the ministry said.
