The two defendants in the case concerning the alleged torture of a person at premises in Pyla will remain in custody, the Larnaca Permanent Criminal Court ruled on Wednesday.
The court set June 3 as the next hearing date for the 48-year-old and the 27-year-old defendants.
The 48-year-old had requested time to raise the issue of abuse of process, arguing that he is being prosecuted in two separate cases stemming from the same testimony. The 27-year-old objected to his detention, with that objection examined on Wednesday. The court subsequently ruled that both men would remain in custody.
The two defendants face 16 joint charges, including conspiracy to commit a felony, conspiracy to commit a misdemeanour, illegal possession and transfer of a Category B firearm, offences under the law ratifying the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, abduction or deprivation of liberty with intent to cause grievous harm, abduction or deprivation of liberty for unlawful confinement, acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm, grievous bodily harm, failure to prevent a felony, assault causing actual bodily harm, common assault, carrying a knife, possession of an offensive weapon, carrying a weapon to cause terror, participation in a criminal organisation and threats.
The 48-year-old faces two additional charges. These concern procuring the execution of a document, allegedly involving the 48-year-old and a wanted person, and refusal to provide samples while under lawful detention.
