The Department of Forests has completed a project to create special openings in the safety barriers of forest roads, allowing the Cyprus mouflon to move freely and safely. The work, which cost about €52,000, aims to stop the animals becoming trapped on the road network. The mouflon is one of the island’s emblematic species.
What the project involved
According to a post by the Department of Forests, the project involved creating openings in the crash barriers along forest roads. These allow mouflon to cross without being confined by the barriers.

Cost and funding
The project had a total cost of about €52,000 and was co-funded by the Structural Funds.
The Department of Forests said the intervention has covered a large part of the remaining needs at the specific points in the forest concerned.
The department added that efforts to protect and manage wildlife in the state forests continue every day.
