Building on Athienou’s long tradition in livestock farming, the school aims to create new career paths for young people.

Athienou’s long tradition in livestock farming, dairy and cheese-making will form the basis of a new vocational school in the community. The Minister of Education, Sport and Youth, Athena Michaelidou, said the decision responds to a long-standing request from the local community. She made the remarks in a written statement on Wednesday, following the Council of Ministers’ approval of the proposal.

How the school will operate

Ms Michaelidou said the Dairy and Cheese-Making School will operate within the Public School of Higher Vocational Education and Training (MIEEK). It will offer the already accredited two-year programme in Dairy and Cheese-Making.

“Our aim is to offer our young people, as well as those who wish to acquire new professional skills, quality educational options with real employment prospects. We are investing in education that responds to the real needs of production and creates opportunities for employment and career development,” she said.

Upgrading vocational education

According to Ms Michaelidou, the decision forms part of the government’s wider policy to upgrade Technical and Vocational Education and Training. The policy also aims to link it more closely with the needs of the economy and the labour market.

Building on local tradition

“Frontline Athienou has a long tradition in livestock farming, dairy and cheese-making. By creating the School, we are building on this productive heritage and creating new opportunities for education, specialisation and professional development, while supporting an important sector of the Cypriot economy,” the Minister said.

Education beyond urban centres

Ms Michaelidou said the school will strengthen the link between education and production. She also highlighted the government’s aim of expanding educational opportunities beyond the major urban centres.

“With the creation of the Dairy and Cheese-Making School, we are strengthening the link between education and production, supporting Athienou and investing in the preservation and development of Cyprus’s productive tradition. We continue to broaden educational opportunities beyond the major urban centres, focusing on the needs of citizens and the balanced development of our country,” she concluded.
