The Democratic Rally (DISY) has made clear that it treats its former president Averof Neophytou’s proposal to review energy sanctions against Russia as a personal political position, separating the party’s stance from his. In a statement, DISY said it remains committed to the common European policy and to close alignment with Greece.
A personal proposal
Referring specifically to its former president’s position, DISY said: “Mr Averof Neophytou’s proposal to review energy sanctions is his personal proposal within the framework of public political dialogue.”
The party added that “everyone has the right to put forward political proposals and suggestions”.
Support for EU and EPP positions
DISY stated that it supports the positions of the European People’s Party (EPP) and the common policy of the 27 EU member states on energy sanctions against Russia.
The party reaffirmed its own political direction, saying it considers it critical and imperative for Cyprus to stand alongside its European partners on major international issues.
Alignment with Greece
DISY also stressed the need for full coordination with Greece. It placed particular emphasis on aligning the political direction of Cyprus and Greece, in order to build partnerships that serve the wider objectives of the Republic of Cyprus and the values of the European Union.
Earlier criticism from Tornaritis
The party’s statement follows criticism of Mr Neophytou’s proposal earlier on Friday by former MP and former DISY deputy president Nikos Tornaritis, who said it raised serious questions about Cyprus’s European orientation, credibility and national objectives.
