How to Clean Your Headphones Properly and Keep Them Working Longer

Regular cleaning can improve hygiene, comfort and performance, whether you use over-ear headphones or wireless earbuds.

Headphones and earbuds can quickly collect sweat, skin oils, earwax, dust and residue from hair products. While most users focus on sound quality and battery life, regular cleaning can help preserve both hygiene and performance.

Experts recommend different approaches depending on whether you use over-ear headphones or in-ear earbuds, but the basic principle remains the same: remove debris gently, avoid excess moisture and pay particular attention to areas that come into contact with skin.

Over-ear headphones need regular wipe-downs

Over-ear and on-ear headphones tend to accumulate oils and sweat on ear cushions and headbands.

For routine cleaning, remove loose dust and hair using a soft brush, dry cloth or a vacuum fitted with a dusting attachment. Ear cushions that are designed to be removable can be taken off to allow access to trapped debris.

A lightly dampened microfibre cloth can then be used to wipe down exterior surfaces, including the cushions and headband. Care should be taken to prevent moisture entering speaker openings, buttons or charging ports.

For stubborn residue, users should first check manufacturer guidelines before using products such as rubbing alcohol, dish soap or multipurpose cleaners, as some materials may be damaged by these substances.

Earbuds require extra attention

Earbuds are particularly prone to the build-up of earwax and debris because they sit inside or close to the ear canal.

Experts recommend removing visible buildup as soon as it appears rather than waiting for a deeper clean. A cotton swab or dedicated earbud-cleaning tool can be used to clear small openings and crevices.

Silicone eartips should be wiped with a slightly damp cloth and inspected regularly for wear. Tips that are cracked, torn, permanently discoloured or no longer fit securely should be replaced.

The exterior of earbuds can be cleaned with a damp cloth, while extra care should be taken around speaker meshes and charging contacts.

Don't forget the charging case

Charging cases can collect dust, lint and debris that may affect charging performance.

A dry cotton swab or soft brush can be used to remove dirt from charging wells and corners. If debris becomes trapped in deeper compartments, short bursts of compressed air may help dislodge it.

The exterior can then be wiped with a slightly damp cloth while avoiding charging ports and electrical contacts.

How often should they be cleaned?

Cleaning frequency depends largely on usage.

For over-ear headphones used daily, experts recommend a quick wipe-down once a week and a more thorough clean about once a month.

Earbuds may require more frequent attention because of their direct contact with the ear. Visible earwax should be removed immediately, while charging cases and hidden crevices should be cleaned monthly.

Regular maintenance not only helps keep headphones hygienic but may also extend their lifespan and maintain audio quality.
