Police carried out extensive coordinated patrols across Cyprus overnight, targeting key points in urban areas to prevent serious crime, safeguard public order and increase public confidence in safety, resulting in 20 arrests and hundreds of driving offences recorded.
Arrests and offences
The overnight operations led to the arrest of 20 people for a range of offences, including illegal residence in the Republic of Cyprus, carrying a knife, illegal possession of drugs, house burglary and theft, failure to appear in court, and fine warrants, among others.
Vehicle and pedestrian checks
During the operations, police stopped and checked 598 drivers and 204 passengers. A further 28 premises checks were carried out to address unlawful activity, resulting in six reports.
Traffic enforcement
Traffic checks resulted in 201 reports for various road traffic violations, alongside 15 cases under investigation for traffic offences. Of the reports issued, 70 concerned drivers exceeding the speed limit, while 29 vehicles were impounded during the checks.
Police also carried out 350 alcohol checks, resulting in 29 reports, along with one case of suspected drug-driving following preliminary drug-test screening.
Ongoing operations
Police said crime prevention and enforcement operations continue daily, with an increased police presence, targeted checks and immediate operational response, aimed at increasing public confidence in safety and safeguarding public order.
