BeActive Event Brings Exercise to Presidential Palace

President Nikos Christodoulides highlighted the benefits of physical activity as staff at the Presidential Palace took part in a BeActive sports event.

The Presidential Palace joined this year's European Week of Sport celebrations on Monday, hosting a BeActive event attended by President Nikos Christodoulides.

The event featured members of the Presidential staff taking part in exercise activities as part of the BeActive campaign, which promotes physical activity and healthy lifestyles across Europe.

Christodoulides highlights benefits of sport

Addressing the gathering, President Nikos Christodoulides said the BeActive initiative originated during Cyprus' first Presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2012 and has been implemented across Europe since 2015.

He noted that Cyprus is among the countries with high participation rates in the programme and said efforts are continuing to increase involvement even further.

Christodoulides stressed that sport is not merely exercise but a way of life.

He added that similar activities are regularly organised in public and private spaces and spoke of his own personal commitment to physical activity, saying it contributes positively to his daily well-being.

Participation targets for 2027

Cyprus Sports Organisation (KOA) president Yiannis Ioannou said sport in Cyprus continues to grow with the support of the government and new initiatives being introduced.

According to Ioannou, the objective is to reach 1,000 activities and increase participation levels from 160,000 to more than 200,000 people by 2027.

Petroulaki attends event

Well-known fitness instructor Eleni Petroulaki also attended the event and spoke about the wider physical and mental health benefits of exercise.

The BeActive campaign forms part of broader European efforts to encourage citizens to become more active and adopt healthier lifestyles.
